Do your students love to read and love to compete?  Battle of the Books is the perfect combination!

Winterset will host a Battle of the Books competition for 5th-8th grade students on Saturday, April 6, 2019.  The contest will start at 8:30 a.m. and likely will finish up around 3:00 p.m.  This event is open to teams from any school.

Students will be in teams of up to 4 students and will work as a team to read a list of books before the contest.  (You can view the list on the "Book List" tab - it is comprised of 20 titles: seven Iowa Children's Choice Award books, seven Iowa Teen Award books, and six other award winners and "classics.")

During the contest, teams will go head-to-head in a quiz bowl-style tournament.  During the matches, two teams will alternate answering questions.  Questions will always have the title of a book on the list as their answer.  (Please see the "Question Submissions" tab for example questions and for information about how teams can submit questions.)  If a team answers their question correctly, they can receive bonus points for knowing the author's name.  If they get a question wrong, the other team can steal and earn their points.  Each round will be 30 questions--15 questions for each team.  We will do a pool tournament with a championship bracket to follow, so each team will be guaranteed at least 3 matches.

The winning team will get a trophy for their school, and each person on the 1st and 2nd place teams will get a medal.  All other students will receive either a participant ribbon or a finalist ribbon.  To offset the cost of the prizes, each team will need to pay a $15 registration fee (per team, not per student).

Please explore this site to find out more information about the contest.  We hope to see you on April 6!
